Mary Anna Evans on Building Well-Rounded Characters: bring them to life on the page. What’s the difference between a cardboard character and one with multiple layers and many dimensions and the feeling of being real flesh and blood? And how would you get such a full-bodied character on the page along with a sense of life beyond that page? In this character workshop, we’ll look at fleshing out characters and then both direct and indirect methods of bring that character to life in your prose. Come with an existing character from your fiction in mind—or create one on the spot!

Ruth Moose on The Art of the Opening: get your story off to a great start with the right first sentence. Openings or Concrete Cocktail Chatter with a purpose. First lines are even more important than first pages to capture and hold a reader. How does one get in fast and furiously the who, what, when and where with a left leaning look toward the all important why. We'll look at examples of first lines and first paragraphs that got the job done. Ruth Moose taught the short story for many years at UNC Chapel Hill, and has authored multiple books of short fiction.
